I was honored to be included as a publisher among six remarkable panelists at a recent roundtable on minority self-publishing authorship. As each author shared their unique journey, the conversation turned to the barriers in publishing - and how self-publishing has transformed those barriers into manageable steps. I spoke about how there's never been a time where it's been easier to enter the book market by self-publishing. Today, the only barriers are the strength of your will and the resourcefulness of your wit. With the right determination, publishing a book is well within reach.
We also tackled the concept of "gatekeepers" in publishing - a reality many authors, especially from minority backgrounds, have encountered. Being a publisher in the group, I offered insights from my own path, which is paved with bumps and bruises that taught me invaluable lessons. My mission is to help others avoid these pitfalls, and it's why I developed our Blueprint for Self-Publishing, a DIY guide aimed at providing clarity and confidence to new authors.
I left the roundtable inspired by the perseverance of my fellow panelists and motivated to support more aspiring authors. If you're ready to take the leap, remember that the tools and guidance are out there. Don't let anything hold you back.
